Appliances, which are used commercially, have to be checked concerning their technical safety in regular periods. As the user of a sunbed has direct contact to the appliance, a safe operation of the units has to be ensured. An electric shock due to a defect appliance may have dramatic consequences, as the user lays directly on the unit. A simple reflexive pulling back of arms or legs is not impossible.
How can entrepreneurs and sun studio owners pay attention to these safety checks? The answer is easy: Professional associations and the VDE-regulations state determined periods, during which electronic appliances have to be inspected concerning their safety. In the well known accident prevention regulations VGB 4, which are now called BGVA 2, a special inspection period for “electrical equipments in firms and rooms of a special type” of one year is mentioned in § 5, point 1.
These inspections are necessary in order to ensure the units´ conditions according to the rules. Further the effective protection against direct and indirect touching is checked.
The inspections can be carried out by each special electrician, who is in charge of the corresponding gages. The check duration necessary is between 15 and 45 minutes according to the used gages and the appliance which is to be checked. Has a repeated inspection been made and passed, the appliances correspond to the valid norms of the VDE-regulations 0702 part 1. If defects have been found out, they have to be repaired as fast as possible. Further the entrepreneur has to be informed. Does a safety relevant defect occur, the unit has to be shut down until the overhaul has been made.

The result of the inspections should always be fixed in an inspection record. Only by this way special electricians and person instructed are able to proof to have taken all safety measures in cases required.
At this point we would like to advise you that in case of damage some insurers use to check the strict keeping of the inspections periods. In case of ignorance the insurers will take liability cut offs.
